Blood Glucose Test

Blood Glucose level is measured with the help of blood glucose test. Glucose is one of the principal sources of energy in our body. Having too much or too little amount of glucose in blood indicate serious diagnosable situation. Increased level of glucose in blood is taken as a sign of diabetes. Diabetes is a kind of disorder that can cause heart disease, blindness, problem in kidney and various other complications. Lower amount of glucose may cause serious backdrop like brain damage.

The main purpose of conducting this type of test is to check whether the blood sugar level is at healthy range. The test is often used to help diagnose and monitor diabetes.

Symptoms of high blood glucose level include abnormal thirst, unusual urination, distorted vision, fatigue. Wounds take excess time in healing when blood contains high level of glucose. Persons showing symptoms like anxiety, perspiration, hunger, etc. at abnormal level is said to have lower level of blood glucose. There are symptoms like delirium, seizures or sudden unconsciousness that may be caused due to existence of lower amount of glucose in blood. Doctor may advice to take glucagon in such cases. For a pregnant woman, she is subjected to a blood glucose test between 24th and 28th week of pregnancy. This type of test is conducted to diagnose gestational diabetes. It is a form of diabetes that happens only during pregnancy.

Samples of blood are generally used to screen for diseases like diabetes – main purpose to conduct the Blood glucose test. If the level stays between 100 to 125 mg/dl, it is considered pre-diabetes. There are oral glucose tolerance test too. For such tests, the patient is required to fast overnight.

When a person is recommended for blood test to diagnose Type 1 diabetes, the initial test involves taking multiple dose insulin and the tests are conducted before meal, exercising, sleeping or critical tasks like driving.
