In the uterus of many women, there are noncancerous growths, especially during the childbearing years. There is almost no cancer risk from the uterine fibroids. They can be of different sizes, ranging from small like seedlings to bulky masses that can enlarge and distort the uterus. There can be multiple fibroids or a single one. You should consult a gynaecologist at a doctor clinic in Hooghly for effective treatment. The gynaecologist will suggest some diagnostic tests to confirm the presence of uterine fibroids before treatment.

Diagnosis

The following are some tests necessary for the diagnosis of uterine fibroids:

  • Endometrial Biopsy:

This procedure helps in the diagnosis of many abnormalities of the uterus including uterine fibroids. You may need to take a painkiller 30 minutes before the procedure. You should tell the concerned doctor if you are pregnant or have any chance of becoming pregnant. You also need to stop any blood-thinning medicines before the procedure. After the procedure, you may need someone to take you back home. There may be a need for other preparations based on your health condition. You must empty your bladder fully before the procedure. You will be lying on an examination table during the procedure. There will be an instrument called a speculum that is inserted into your vagina for spreading your vaginal walls and having a clear view of your cervix. The doctor will use an antiseptic solution to clean your cervix and will numb the area either by injection or a spray. Through the cervical opening, the doctor will insert a thin, rod-like instrument and move it up to the particular location for biopsy. The doctor will insert a catheter with a small tube inside it and collects the endometrial tissues. The tissues are normally sent to laboratories such as a pathology lab in Uttarpara for proper testing and the preparation of diagnosis reports. You need to rest for some time after the procedure.

  • Ultrasound:

In this procedure, sound waves create a picture of your uterus. It is possible to map and measure the fibroids. In transabdominal ultrasound, the technician moves the ultrasound device (transducer) over your abdomen for getting the images of your uterus. The device is placed into your vagina in transvaginal ultrasound in order to obtain the pictures of the uterus.

  • Hysteroscopy:

While carrying out this procedure, the doctor will insert a small, lighted telescope through your cervix into your uterus. The uterine cavity expands on injecting saline into your uterus. This helps the doctor to properly examine the walls of your uterus and also the openings of your fallopian tubes.

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI):

The doctor can clearly view the location and size of fibroids. It also helps in deciding the effective treatment option and identifying the different types of tumour. A woman having a large uterus or approaching menopause often has to undergo MRI.
